Blog News:  Yahoo Buys Blogging Site Tumblr for $1.1 Billion

Blog site Tumblr was bought by Yahoo for $1.1 billion in cash on Monday. That’s a lot of blogging for the dollar!

Why did Yahoo make the purchase for this blogging giant? Yahoo hopes to grow their traffic with this purchase of Tumblr. How much could Tumblr add to Yahoo’s traffic? According to comScore, Tumblr in March had 29.3 million unique U.S. visitors. Yahoo’s combined sites got 191.4 million visitors, more than another other company except Google, which had 1 million more.

The other reason that Yahoo made the purchase is because Tumblr has a younger, “hipper” demographic that will possible enhance it’s advertising revenue. According to Forbes, Tumblr had $13 million in revenue for 2012 and hoped to suddenly leap to $100 million in 2013. The details are still being worked out as far as what the advertising model will be.

What does this mean for you and your blog? The benefits are still being worked out and it made take weeks for the details to be work out and for you understand how it helps you and your blog. If you are a WordPress blog user, this purchase has little or not effect on your blogging activities. You may share your blog post with your Tumblr blog through a plugin. I doubt that will change anytime some.
